      Introduction

      Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most fascinating wildlife areas of Kerala. Composed of thorny bushes, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the rain shadow regions of the lofty Western Ghats and receives only rainfall for 48 days throughout the year.

      Covering an area of 90 square kilometers, the forests of Chinnar is a thorny scrub forest of xerophytes and is also the home of Giant Squirrels. It is a dry deciduous region due to lack of rainfall.

      Location:

      Cochin Airport is 150 kms away but one can also take the Coimbatore Airport. Chinnar is connected by major railway stations such as Ernakuluam, Alluva and Pollachi.

      Wildlife in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary:

      Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary covers a vast area and has a varied wildlife.

      One gets to see elephants, Sambar, tiger, gaurs, turtles, vipers darters, monkeys and even the colorful peacocks. Spread over acres of land, the Chinnar Forest has rock strewn patches which adds to the beauty of the region.

      The vegetation here is composed of wet grasslands, dry deciduous forests and high shoals. Among the different species of plant life one gets to see Acacia arabica (Karivelam), Acacia leucofolia (Velvelam), Santalum album (Chandanam), Anogeissuslatifolia (Mazhukanjiram), Elaeocarpus recurvatus (Bhadraksham) and Strobilanthus kunthianus (Neelakurinji).

      Amongst all of them the Kurinji flower blossoms once in every twelve years and is a rare phenomenon.

      The highest peaks located in Chinnar National Park are Kottakombumalai (2144 metre), Vellaikal malai (1863m) and Viriyoottu malai (1845 metre).
