The history of Kerala dates back to the Mauryan rule of Ashoka, whose inscriptions mention the three independent kingdoms of the South of which were Malabar, Travancore and Cochin. This was way back in 269 to 232 B.C.

At the end of 8th century A.D., the South Indian kingdoms were ruled by Pallavas, Chalukkyas and Rashtrakutas.
During the 8th century Kerala also witnessed a reform movement started by Adi Shankaracharya which preached people about monotheism.
Kerala during the 13th century was also ruled by one of the noted kings of South India known as Raja Ravi Verma.
