      History of the Snake Boat Race:

      The Vallamkali in English is known as the Snake Boat Race. When Jawaharlal Nehru visited Kerala in 1952, he received a roaring welcome from the people of Alleppy and even got the chance to ride the Snake Boat of Kerala. He was so impressed that he presented them a trophy which in which he had inscribed words praising these wonderful and unique sports of Kerala. From then the Snake Boat Race became an integral part of Kerala.

      The Snake Boat Race in Kerala is a manifestation of the sprit, the warmth and the passion of the people of Kerala. The elongated boats shaped like snakes are rowed by a number of men who splash amidst the backwaters and compete with each other vying for the winner's position. Tourists enjoy the entire event, as these boats sweep through the waters top make their way.

      The snake boat is usually managed by 4 helmsmen, 25 singers and 100-125 oarsmen, who row amidst the waters with the fast rhythm of vanchipattu which is a song of the boatmen. Thousands of onlookers enjoy the sight as this fascinating regatta competition lights up the backwaters of Kerala.


      The beginning of the race generally begins with colorful pageant of floats, performing arts and decorated boats.
