Introduction
The Kerala beaches on the crystal waters of the Arabian Sea are little pieces of heaven on earth. The Varkala beach is one of the still lesser known and therefore one of the most tranquil of Kerala beaches. With its temples and holy springs, Varkala is also a significant name is the religious map of the local inhabitants.
A coco palm fringed rocky cliff dropping into the sea at the far end of the Varkala beach gives the landscape a rugged wild charm. The surf crowned blue waves caressing the sands turn crimson at sunset to melt away in the embrace of darkness. Locally known as Papanasam, meaning the killer of sins, a dip at Varkala beach is believed to wash away one's sins. The nearby Janardana Swamy temple dedicated to Ayyappa is said to be between 800 and 2000 years old and considered an auspicious spot by the local people.
