The tranquil waters of the Beautiful backwaters and the palm fringed emerald canals are fast gaining momentum as one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Kollam, known as Quilon to the Portugese is the southern gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and consequently a major tourist destination in Kerala.

Kollam was the pivot of trade during the rule of the Travancore Kingdom and was known as Desinganadu. Kollam owes its present name to the then king of Travancore, Udaya Marthanda Varma who established the town in 825 AD. It is in Kollam that he established a new calendar and that is why he chose this name for the place. The word Kollam in Malayalam means Year. The Asthamudi Lake forms the focal point of the backwater destinations in Kollam. The boat cruise between Kollam and Alappuzha is the longest (8 hours) and the most popular in Kerala. Short canal cruises to Munroe Island village is a truly enchanting and rewarding experience.

Kollam is a major cashew processing and coir manufacturing post in Kerala.
