The tranquil waters of the Beautiful backwaters and the palm fringed emerald canals are fast gaining momentum as one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.
Crisscrossed by twelve rivers, numerous lagoons, and emerald lakes, Kasargod is a major backwater destination in Kerala. situated at the northern tip of Kerala with the Western Ghats on its east and the Arabian Sea on the east, this district is a rare specimen of the bounty of nature and fast is acquiring prominence in the tourist map of India as 'The land of Yakshagana and Theyyam'. Incidentally, Theyyam is an art form particular to Kanuur and Kasargod and includes dance and music performed as an offering to God
The nomenclature of Kasargod is shrouded in debates. Some say, Kasargod is the result of the combination of two Sanskrit words kaasaara (which means lake or pond) and kroda (which means a place where treasure is kept). Some others say that it is the place where Kaasaraka trees are found in abundance and hence the name Kasargod. However, both views are true since Kasargod is dotted with various lagoons and water bodies as well as plenty of Kaasaraka trees
