      Alappuzha Backwaters

Come and indulge in a vacation of a lifetime..

      Introduction

The tranquil waters of the Beautiful backwaters and the palm fringed emerald canals are fast gaining momentum as one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Alappuzha, earlier known as Alleppey is any day the most popular backwater destination in Kerala. In fact, Alappuzha is the backwater hub of Kerala. Interspersed with numerous palm fringed waterways, lakes and backwaters, Alappuzha is a rare haven of the bounty of nature. A hot favorite among waterfowls, migratory birds and other species of marine wildlife, Alappuzha has a special place in the maritime history of Kerala. History says Alappuzha had trade relations with Greece and Rome before Christ and the Middle Ages. Alappuzha in fact existed as early as the Sangam Age and fids mention in classical literature.

The houseboat cruises and overnight stay at houseboats with modern amenities have become quite a crowd puller.

The icing is Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala, famous for cultivation of rice under mean sea level somewhat like in Holland. The paddy fields right at the heart of the backwaters, are now a major attraction among tourists who prefer to sail among them on rice boats.

Alleppey is also famous for its boat races that are organized at the Punnamada Lake every year for the Nehru Trophy. This race takes place every year on the second Saturday of August during the Onam festival. The giant snake boats called Chundanvalloms propelled by over 100 rowers, race against each other for the prestigious trophy.

The coir industry in Alappuzha is quite flourishing and now forms a compulsory part of itineraries to Alappuzha.

The forlorn beach at Alappuzha with a pier jutting out into the sea and a lighthouse in the vicinity offers a marvelous experience as well.

      Other Tourist Attractions in Alappuzha:

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, Krishnapuram Temple, Devi Temple, Chettikulangara Bhagavathy temple, Kottamkulangara Mahavishnu temple, St. Andrews Church, Gajendra Miksham, Pathiramanal Island
